Review: This is the first full length by this German five piece after ten years of existence and clearly it was worth the wait.
Drudensang may be from Germany, but this honestly sounds like something straight out of the classic Finnish Black Metal scene, (think Horna or Behexen) which is absolutely a compliment. The band plays pretty straight forward Black Metal but with beefed up production (which is never too clean that it becomes stale or over sanitised) and incredibly melodic riffs which are backed up by additional synths.
Krampn gives a fantastic vocal performance, traditional scratchy Black Metal vocals, but executed so well that they really stand out. The drums are totally pummelling, and the bass is actually pretty audible, which is generally a recipe for success in black metal. This whole thing is mixed perfectly, everything is audible but it’s never overproduced. I should also mention the synth work, it’s minimalist but works really well, especially on tracks like ‘Rouhnåchtszauberey’.
Overall if you’re looking for black metal that’s melodic and memorable, but still raw and hateful, this is an album you need to hear.
